Over 100 primary and secondary school students from north Dublin DEIS (designated disadvantaged) schools convened at the Irish Centre for Talented Youth (CTYI) in DCU on April 9th for a special awards ceremony. The ceremony acknowledged their participation in assessments and celebrated their qualification to take part in the CTYI summer programmes at DCU in conjunction with the DCU Access Service.

Minister Roisin Shortall TD officiated at the ceremony. The event was supported by Matheson Ormsby Prentice (MOP) who contributed towards the students to participate in the assessment and are offering scholarships for students to attend the classes in the summer.

Presenting certificates at the event,  Roisin Shortall TD Minister of State, Department of Health with responsibility for Primary Care said, ''Educational quality is a huge priority for this Government. For many years I have been mindful of how important and beneficial it is for educational supports to be spread equally and generously throughout the community. The Centre for Talented Youth in DCU is a shining example of this innovative thinking.''

Director of CTYI, Dr Colm O'Reilly said, "These ceremonies are hugely important to recognise the excellent achievements of these students. It is vital that all students be allowed to fulfill their potential regardless of their socio-economic circumstances, I am delighted to work with MOP to allow these students to avail of the wonderful programmes on offer at DCU”.

The President of DCU, Prof Brian MacCraith was also in attendance to welcome the students and their parents to DCU.
